Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Initial reports of a collision turned to tragedy Friday when it was confirmed that a 16-year-old boy was killed in Concord in a wreck that involved a work truck and other vehicles, according to police. A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said the victim was riding a bicycle when he was pinned between one of the vehicles and a utility pole. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. One driver was arrested for vehicular manslaughter, police said. That driver's name also hasn't been released. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Concord Police Ofc. Nanthasiri at 925-603-5096. (Concord Patch)
  2. An armed robbery occurred on Friday morning around 6 a.m. at the 7-Eleven on Monument Boulevard at Oakmead. One of the two suspects fired a shot towards an employee, but fortunately it missed and hit the floor. The suspects fled with a 24 pack of beer. (Claycord.com)
  3. Clayton Safeway on Clayton Road at Kirker Pass has installed permanent barriers in front of their entrances. The move comes after an unknown suspect destroyed three doors and two railings by driving into them on two different nights this week. The same person, according to police, is also responsible for destroying five garage doors in a Pleasant Hill neighborhood on Wednesday night. (Claycord.com)
  4. Police attempts to stop a robbery suspect went briefly awry in Walnut Creek Saturday after the female suspect abandoned her car and took off on foot across I-680. The unidentified woman was arrested by a pursuing police officer. It is believed her car's license plates were scanned by an automated reader, prompting the chase from Orinda/Lafayette into Walnut Creek. (News 24/680)
  5. Contra Costa County Public Works will begin construction of the Crockett Area Guardrail Upgrades Project starting Monday, February 28 through late April. Work will occur between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Funding for this project is provided by Gas Tax (SB1) and Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Funds. More information for this project can be found at http://www.cccounty.us/pwdmap.
