Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- At its statewide conference last week, the League of California Cities announced the winners of the prestigious Helen Putnam Award for Excellence in 2022. All 19 cities and towns in Contra Costa County and Contra Costa Health received a League of California Cities award for excellence for the Intergovernmental Collaboration for the Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime (A3) behavioral health crisis response initiative. The team worked to develop a new model in which a person in crisis has someone to talk to, someone to respond, and a place to go to receive behavioral health services. The result of the collaboration is A3 Community Crisis Response — where anyone can get professional help at anytime, anywhere in the county. (Concord Patch)
- Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) along with Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) introduced the Seaman Danyelle Luckey Military Medical Accountability Amendment Act of 2022. This act "expands the rights of servicemembers and their families to file medical malpractice claims stemming from botched care and medical negligence onboard vessels large enough to have substantial medical capabilities, such as aircraft carriers and amphibious ships." The act was named for Seaman Danyelle Luckey who died of sepsis aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in 2016. (Claycord.com)
- Want to have a true Oktoberfest experience? Head out to Clayton on October 1 and 2. This city really knows how to party, Bavarian style! According to The Pioneer, "in addition to traditional German music, food and beer, the event features arts and craft vendors selling everything from hot sauces to jewelry. New this year will be a Christmas Market booth of items made in Germany. A full-size carnival will be open Friday as well as on the two Oktoberfest days." Prost! (Pioneer Publishers)
- A San Ramon man was found guilty, on Thursday, of threatening the life of a senator, as well as several gun charges. According to the Office of the District Attorney, "Erik Triana, 51, was charged by the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office on April 25 with an eight count felony complaint. On September 14, a jury in Martinez found Triana guilty of threatening the life of Senator Wiener, two counts of possessing assault weapons (an AR-15 rifle and a privately made 9 mm pistol), two counts for manufacturing or assembling unregistered firearms (known commonly as ghost guns), and two counts of having a concealed firearm in a vehicle. A not guilty verdict was reached on a criminal threat of death or great bodily injury to Senator Wiener." Deputy District Attorney Stephanie Kang said, "while free speech is a cornerstone of our democracy and a Constitutionally protected right, there is a clear line between political discourse and threats of violence. The jury's verdict in this case highlights the fact that threats to seriously harm or kill a public servant because of disagreement with their policies is not protected speech and will not be tolerated." - On Wednesday afternoon a Martinez police officer noticed a suspicious vehicle and decided to investigate. After speaking with the owner of the vehicle, the officer retrieved some narcotics and a loaded handgun from the car. The subject was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility for booking. Thank you to the Martinez police for making our streets safer! (Claycord.com)
