Here are the top four stories today in Concord:
- Concord was ranked the No. 1 happiest and smiliest city in America in a study sponsored by HouseFresh. "We used Microsoft's face recognition API, Azure, to analyze a database of Instagram selfies from every state and the 100 biggest U.S. cities to see which are the happiest places to live," the study's authors wrote. The results? Concord had a happiness score of 79.1 out of 100, the highest score in America. With nearly three-quarters of residents 74.4 percent grinning in their photos, it also ranked the smiliest. (Concord Patch)
- One person died in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday on Monument Boulevard, near Lacey Lane. One of the involved drivers, an 84-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other two drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Monument Boulevard was closed between Lacey Lane and Reganti Drive for about five hours while authorities investigated. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The fatal incident remains under investigation; police asked any witnesses to contact Traffic Officer Nanthasiri at 925-671-5096.(Concord Patch)
- Easter came a bit early at this East Bay rabbit rescue where they were overwhelmed with rabbit surrenders. "We have never seen anything like this," said Joan Wegner, president of East Bay Rabbit Rescue. "Our adoptions aren't making a dent. For every rabbit adopted, there are three taking their place. In the decade that we have been rescuing bunnies, we have never felt so helpless." They're getting increased calls to rescue strays at the same time demand is drying up. "These are bunnies [are] from Craigslist, backyard breeders, flea markets and county fairs," Wegner said. Wegner is also concerned that fewer people are spaying and neutering their pets. "Once fixed, rabbits are easier to litter box train than a cat while unfixed rabbits typically will not use a litter box," she said. So, if you have rabbit, get them fixed. If you need a rabbit, I know where you can probably get one, cheap. (Claycord.com)
- The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has approved a $2.2 million settlement in a discrimination case against the DA's office brought by several plaintiffs. Claycord.com notes that the plaintiffs allege that "under Becton's leadership, not enough was done to promote women in the office, women were discriminated against because of their age, and more female representation was needed." According to DA spokesperson Ted Asregadoo, this settlement resolves all claims and it includes a dismissal of the original lawsuit. (Claycord.com)
