Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- Nine muralists will create outdoor, wall-size murals at various locations around Concord in June. Local artist Arsenio Baca and nationally known Jesse Hernandez (aka Urban Aztec) are among the professional artists contributing their talents to this extensive public art project that will begin the weekend of June 11-12. This year's Creative Concord is estimated to cost $140,000. The Brenden Mann Foundation provided $10,000, and applications are pending for two additional grants. The goal is for most of the artwork to be finished by June 26, with each mural taking about a week to complete. (Pioneer Publishers)
- High winds toppled trees and bocce shelters along the 24/680 corridor on Monday. At the Martinez Marina, bocce ball officials worked quickly to save shade structures after high winds tossed them around like parasols, snapping support poles and creating a mess! Trees were reported down in both Martinez and Concord. See the dramatic pictures at the link. (News 24/680)
- At 12:23 pm Monday, approximately 20 students at Antioch middle School were exposed to pepper spray in the quad area of the school located on D Street in the City of Antioch. The incident prompted a response by Antioch Police and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District who treated approximately 12 students from the incident. According to preliminary information, it appears an assault occurred when the pepper spray was released by a student. (East County Today)
- According to a news release Monday, MCE and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) are partnering to deliver clean transportation programs that are expected to reduce more than 50,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The Charge Up Contra Costa Program, funded by a $3.5 million California Energy Commission grant and $840,000 in match funding from MCE and CCTA, will promote electric vehicle (EV) charging station installations through rebates, EV car sharing, eBike rebates, and workforce development. - During the Board meeting on April 6, Contra Costa Water District's Board President, Lisa M. Borba, announced that she will resign from the Board effective April 22, after 12 years representing the community on water issues. In her tenure on the Board, her highest priorities have been the responsible management of public money and providing quality customer service. The shows will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and close out at 8 p.m. each week. Concord is thrilled to bring back fan favorites, such as Zeppparella, and introduce new performers, like Matchbox Twenty Too! In addition to Music & Market, Tuesday Night Blues will be returning for the first time since the summer of 2019. Tuesday Night Blues will run each Tuesday in July from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Facebook)
- The Museum of the San Ramon Valley is presenting a free online program on April 21 at 11:30 on The story of James Witt Dougherty. Obviously, there must be a reason this name has become such a prominent part of our valley.
- Jonesin' for a great sando? According to Diablo Magazine, you need look no further than our favorite towns of San Ramon, Walnut Creek, Martinez and Pleasanton where 4 of their Top 5 East Bay picks reside. Kimchi and bacon grilled cheese? Sure! I'll give it a try!
