Coughlin competed in 12 events and won 12 medals, and became the first U.S. female athlete to win six medals at a single Games. She is tied for the most Olympic medals for a U.S. female athlete. 2. Firefighters battled a second grass fire Friday in as many days near the city of Brentwood. The Walnut Fire broke out around 1 p.m. Friday at Marsh Creek Road and Walnut Boulevard. The 50-acre wildfire was burning on both sides of Vasco Road. The Marsh Fire, which broke out Thursday at Marsh Creek Road and Walnut Boulevard, burned some 200 acres and was deemed 100-percent contained shortly before the Walnut Fire broke out Friday. 3. Congressman Mark DeSaulnier has announced that the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill he authored that would allow East Bay resident Isabel Bueso and people like her with rare diseases to remain in the United States. The bill must be passed by the U.S. Senate before the end of the year to be signed into law. Isabel is a summa cum laude graduate from Cal State East Bay and an advocate for patients with rare diseases. Before her treatment was discovered, Isabel was only expected to live to 7 years old. She is now 26. (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Last month, Save Mt. Diablo organized a two day bike ride. Twelve hearty adventurers took part. They not only got a couple of days in the wilderness. They were treated to a gourmet dinner with beer and wine along with music and stories to round out their evening. The group covered land owned by East Bay Regional Parks, California State Parks and Save Mount Diablo on their trek. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. A high speed chase on Highway 4 through Franklin Canyon ended with the driver eventually crashing and taking off on foot on the N. Main Street off ramp in Walnut Creek.
