Contra Costa Co. Man Killed In Head-On Collision Identified

Breaking: The fatally injured man was 73 years old, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA -- A Byron man who died at the scene of a head-on collision on Byron Highway Tuesday morning has been identified as 73-year-old George Mariman, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

The collision was reported at North Bruns Way around 9:35 a.m., east of the Byron Airport, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A blue Honda Civic heading west veered into the eastbound lane, striking a gold Mazda minivan, according to the CHP. Witnesses told investigators the vehicles were both going roughly 50 mph at the time.

Mariman died at the scene. The other driver suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to Walnut Creek for medical treatment at John Muir Medical Center.

The crash and subsequent investigation affected traffic into Tuesday afternoon.
