Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Five San Francisco Bay Area food banks have a critical shortage of volunteers and are reaching out to the public for assistance. The food banks — Alameda County Community Food Bank, Food Bank of Contra Costa Solano, Redwood Empire Food Bank, San Francisco Marin Food Bank and Second Harvest of Silicon Valley — serve 12 Northern California counties. Volunteer rates at food banks tend to be traditionally slow between January and March after the holiday season, but this year's drop was more significant as employers, schools and community reinstate stay-at-home policies. - On Tuesday, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will discuss increasing the limit of what individuals can contribute to county campaigns. the limit is currently at $1,675 per election cycle which was put in place in 2005. The new proposal would increase this to $5,000. If approved, it applies to candidates for the offices of Assessor, Auditor-Controller, County Clerk-Recorder, District Attorney, Sheriff-Coroner, and Treasurer-Tax Collector (East County Today)
- The Stockton Police Department reported Sunday that a 15-year-old teen wanted for a felony in Contra Costa County killed a 37-year-old man while trying to evade police in the City of Stockton. The suspect was taken to the hospital and then booked into San Joaquin County Juvenile Hall for vehicular manslaughter. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Stockton Police Department at 209-937-8377. (East County Today)
- The Mt. Diablo Unified School District is hiring substitute teachers at an increased pay rate of $230 per day or $250 per day for retirees or under special circumstances, effective January 21. In addition, the District is offering a $1,000 bonus to any substitute in a "teaching" position who works 20 days between Jan. 13 and Feb. 28. Apply at https://rebrand.ly/MDUSDSubs. Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.
Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
