Contra Costa Reinstates Retired Chief
Fire district taps former chief to guide operations and maintain continuity during search for permanent lead.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — It appears fire chiefs who happen to be looking for a new place to land are hard to find.
Just weeks after retiring, the Contra Costa County Fire District's former chief has been called back to lead the agency.
Retired Chief Lewis Broschard will temporarily fill the vacancy his departure created during the search for a permanent lead.

Broschard stepped down in March after more than 18 years.
The move brings back experienced leadership as the agency navigates growth, wildfire risk, and regional coordination, according to the Contra Costa County Fire District.

Officials said the move maintains continuity as the agency manages expansion and increasing wildfire threats.
During his tenure, Broschard oversaw the annexation of the East Contra Costa and Rodeo-Hercules fire districts, as well as negotiations for a service contract with the City of Pinole. He also expanded staffing, upgraded facilities, and increased firefighting resources across the district, according to a statement from the agency.
District 3 Contra Costa County Supervisor Diane Burgis said Broschard’s return ensures experienced leadership and stability as the district conducts its search for a permanent replacement.
