Hey, Concord! Here's everything you need to know to get this Thursday started off right. Here's what's happening in town today.
First, today's weather:
Dense fog will lift. High: 67 Low: 44.
Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- The Concord Historical Society is planning to dedicate the Dave Brubeck Stage this spring as part of its premier annual fundraising event. Brubeck was a prolific, innovative and beloved jazz legend and composer who was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Concord, where years later the Concord Jazz Festival originated and has continued in various formats for over 50 years. The Brubeck stage dedication is set for Friday, May 27 at the Betty Barnes Hall, 1928 Clayton Road in Concord — the home of the Concord Historical Society. (Concord Patch)
- Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton is pressing multiple felony charges against a suspect arrested for a retail theft and carjacking incident at Ace Hardware in Blackhawk, she announced Tuesday. On November 25 officers were dispatched to the Ace Hardware store where several witnesses provided a description of the theft suspects and a getaway vehicle. A short time later, officers received a report from a victim stating he had been carjacked at knifepoint. The victim drove the suspect to San Ramon, where undercover police officers reportedly observed the suspect carjack a second vehicle in the Crow Commons Shopping Center. Officers stopped the second vehicle and rescued two people who said the car had been taken by force. They then arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Philander Johnson who is in custody as he waits for his arraignment, the District Attorney's Office said. (Claycord.com)
- A suspect arrested in connection with a flash-mob style theft at the Walnut Creek Nordstrom appeared in court Monday. Two more were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, but were already released from custody, according to a report by ABC7 news. One of those released is a previously convicted felon who is charged with using a Glock handgun in connection with the theft. The Sheriff's Office now says it is investigating the suspects' release. - On Tuesday, Antioch City Clerk Ellie Householder was served with recall papers for her position as city clerk. If approved, she would be facing two simultaneous recalls for both her position as City Clerk, and for school board trustee with the Antioch Unified School District. According to the recall petition, she has violated the California Public Act, hindered constituent requests and rejected versions of a recall petition against Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe on multiple occasions. (East County Today)
- During its meeting Wednesday night, the Antioch Planning Commission discussed creating a Transitional Housing Zoning Overlay District for the Executive Inn on East 18th Street, to provide temporary shelter for some of the city's homeless residents. The proposal moves forward the effort announced in 2020 by the council's Unhoused Residents Ad Hoc Committee by Mayor Lamar Thorpe and then-Mayor Pro Tem and committee member Joy Motts. The council on a split vote of 3-2 approved pursuing funding for the program, earlier this year. (Antioch Herald)
