Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday heard arguments considering creating an ordinance requiring electricity become the sole power source for all new residential and hotels, offices, and retail buildings in the county. The ordinance would prohibit the installation of natural gas piping in those buildings. The ordinance wouldn't apply to future developments already approved before the new law is enacted. The ordinance also wouldn't prohibit emergency backup power sources, like generators, that run on fossil fuel sources. The new law would have to be approved by the California Energy Commission before being enacted. Staff is recommending the county approve the proposal with an operating date of July 1, 2022. - Two thieves robbed two separate CVS stores in Rossmoor and on Bancroft Road within minutes of each Monday, vaulting the pharmacy counter at each location and taking cash. An ambulance was called to treat at least one victim for unspecified injuries at the Rossmoor location, reportedly after a pharmacist was beaten when the thieves demanded drugs. The perpetrators donned hoodies and black masks, so no definitive description was given. (News 24/680)
- Pioneer Elementary School Principal Casey McClure disputes a report that he forced the resignation of former parent club president Krystyna Rakow over a t-shirt supporting police and showcasing her patriotism for the American flag. McClure issued a formal letter to the Brentwood Pioneer Elementary School community over the weekend after an article was published by the Delta Sun Times. McClure said he is trying to remain as neutral as possible on social issues. Which is resulting in some in the community making a lot of assumptions and accusations about his stance on police and the American Flag — both of which he said he supports. He called the Delta Sun Times story false and a constructed story. (East County Today)
- John Flannigan scored a game-high 16 points and teammate Jordan Webster added 14 to guide host De La Salle to a 65-54 victory over Capital Christian on Monday night in the MLK Classic. Flannigan supplied 11 of his points during the third quarter for the Spartans (11-4). (Scorebooklive.com)
- Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09), who represents portions of Contra Costa County, has announced that he will not seek reelection. The congressman issued the following statement: "Today I am announcing that I will not seek reelection in California's newly created 9th Congressional District.... I am very proud of the many accomplishments that my staff and I have achieved in Congress..." You can read the full statement here: (East County Today)
