Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. The board of San Francisco Unified voted last week to eliminate positions for 300 staff; in Mt. Diablo Unified the number of cuts is 99. There hasn't been a big round of job cuts in many districts since the end of the Great Recession a decade ago, and 2022 is a year of record staff shortages and record school funding. So, why should anyone be laid off now? The biggest factor for many districts is declining enrollments, which will shrink their state revenue. Some districts that do issue pink slips will rescind a portion, if not most, after resignations and retirements create openings this spring and summer. But meanwhile, districts may see that young teachers they give notice to won't wait to see what happens. In a tight labor market, plenty of districts will be happy to recruit them. (Claycord.com)
  2. Two veteran Antioch Police officers were promoted by Interim Chief Tony Morefield to sergeant and corporal in February. New Sergeant James Colley was Officer of the Year in 2013 while new Corporal Casey Brogdon is currently a SWAT Team member and serves on the Peer Support Team. (Antioch Herald)
  3. "Come One, Come All!" The Discovery Bay Yacht Club is encouraging the entire community to participate in their annual Opening Day Boat Parade, April 9. The 2022 Opening Day Boat Parade focus is 'Celebrating Boating and the Discovery Bay Community', and parade participation is open to the general public! "If you have a boat, assemble your crew, register, and join the parade!" said DBYC Rear Commodore, Roger Boaz. Parade participants are not required to decorate their vessels, but there will be prizes for the most enthusiastic boat. (Delta Sun Times)
  4. Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich is scheduled as a special guest at the upcoming Community Awards Luncheon, hosted by the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, at which he will present a State of the Town address to attendees. Festivities are set to kick off at 11:30 a.m. on March 16 in the Veterans Memorial Building of the San Ramon Valley at 400 Hartz Avenue. Tickets for the luncheon are $50, with additional recognitions for several levels of sponsorship available. Tickets and more information are available here. 5. Police in Benicia are investigating the apparent homicide of a man working at a market in the 2000 block of Columbus Parkway Tuesday. The victim was identified as Bahadur Singh, a well known and respected local business owner. Officers responding to an alarm call at the business at 10:04 p.m. – minutes after the store was due to close – found Singh down and unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper chest inside the store. Police said "at this point in the investigation we believe that the shooting happened during a suspected robbery." (News 24/680)
