Drink Beer, Fight Polio + Polite Politics + Donation Drive

Stay in the loop about everything going on in Concord with Patch's daily newsletter.

(Patch Media)

Get on up, Concord! Let's get you started this Saturday with everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Partly cloudy with a High: 76 and Low:50.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Berkeley police have detained five juveniles believed to have been the ones who violently stole a woman's purse in Walnut Creek on Monday. The five youths were also wanted for a string of other mayhem, including carjacking and stealing a laptop from a customer at a coffee shop. After a pursuit and crash, the five were apprehended. They range in age from 11 - 15, so I'm guessing driving without a license will be among the offenses. (News 24/680)
  2. If you could fight polio by drinking beer, would you do it? Me, too! Put your money where your mouth is by signing up for the Brentwood Rotary Pints for Polio event at Harvest Park Bowl on Oct. 24. Pints for Polio is a craft beer and cider festival offering the chance to sample 50 different beers and ciders in a festive atmosphere of live music from the Funk Shui Band, food from B-Boys BBQ and fun. And, you'll not only be helping fight polio, half of the proceeds will go back to your community in the form of local scholarships. Fight polio, help kids, drink beer - win/win/win! (Thepress.net)
  3. The Los Vaqueros Reservoir Expansion Project passed a significant milestone this week, officially filing agreements to form a Joint Powers Authority. This project will transform the reservoir from a local resource to a regional facility. Expanding Los Vaqueros to a new capacity of 275,000 acre-feet and adding new conveyance facilities will provide environmental, water supply reliability, operational flexibility, water quality and recreational benefits. (Contra Costa Herald)
  4. In a show of respect for her 34 years of public service, retiring Contra Costa County District 4 Supervisor Karen Mitchoff will manage the board's gavel in 2022, a year when vice chair Federal Glover would have taken over the board leadership duties from current chair Diane Burgis of Brentwood. Vice chair Glover of Pittsburg, who would have customarily been automatically approved by his supervisorial colleagues as chair for 2022, made the motion to transfer the board chair duties to Mitchoff as an act of respect for her public service dating back to 1981 in the office of late Contra Costa Sherriff-Coroner Richard Rainey as his executive secretary. Who says politics is ugly business? (Contra Costa Herald)
  5. The Contra Costa County Office of Education has been awarded a grant of $5 million over three years to build school capacity to support students struggling with reading, students with disabilities and students with dyslexia. "We are thrilled to be recipients of such an important grant that will allow us to develop and design strategies for literacy learning for all students, and also support our most vulnerable and challenged students," Contra Costa County Superintendent Lynn Mackey said in a statement.
