Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. State mediators are getting involved in negotiations between Mt. Diablo Unified School District and its teachers' union, which this week filed an impasse declaration, saying the district's bargaining team has failed to present a reasonable proposal. According to the district, agreements have yet to be reached on salaries, benefits, class sizes and other topics. MDUSD Superintendent Adam Clark said, "We are going to go through the impasse process and continue to bargain in good faith and we're going to try to reach an agreement." (Claycord.com)
  2. Police arrested a fourth suspect involved in an 80-person retail theft at Walnut Creek's Broadway Plaza Nordstrom, the Walnut Creek Police Department announced on Wednesday. Walnut Creek Police arrested 21-year-old Jordan San Felipe on Tuesday in relation to the crime. He was booked into the Martinez detention facility for charges relating to robbery, burglary, possession of stolen property and organized retail theft. (Claycord.com)
  3. Tri-Valley law enforcement will keep an extra eye out for drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at several sobriety checkpoints in Dublin and Livermore this weekend. Dublin Police Services and the Livermore Police Department will both hold separate DUI and driver's license checkpoints at undisclosed locations within their respective city limits on Friday night (Dec. 17), from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Both DPS and LPD will also have DUI patrols on Saturday (Dec. 18) from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. (Pleasanton Weekly.com)
  4. The annual Concord 5K run/walk returned last month after a year off. Organizers canceled the event last year due to the pandemic. Wyatt Erickson finished first on the 5K course for the men with a time of 17:56. Finishing first for the women, Elise Chu came in with a time of 21:43. The event raised $1,500 for the Contra Costa Blue Star Moms. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council unanimously approved a final report from Urban Strategies that could help begin the process towards implementing a pilot for the Antioch Care Team Program. The crisis response pilot is aimed at reducing law enforcement engagement when the call does not need police presence and places value on trauma-informed, de-escalation and harm reduction techniques. • For the first time in more than 100 years, North America's largest land bird, the California condor, graced skies above the eastern slope of Mount Diablo this summer. Condor No. 828, a 6-year-old female, left Pinnacles National Park probably searching for a nesting site. The historic flight of 828, the first wild-fledged bird in the Pinnacles Condor Recovery Program, reached farther north in western California than any other condor since the release program began in the 1990s. Conservationists and bird-lovers are hopeful that the birds will repopulate their bygone habitats in the Diablo Range and beyond. (Pioneer Publishers)
