Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- The Concord City Council on Tuesday heard the case to adopt a residential tenant anti-harassment protection ordinance. The city has been working on the ordinance since June 2021, getting input from the public and the city's housing and economic development committee.
The options considered included prohibiting various forms of harassment of tenants by landlords, doing renovations to a unit without notice or permission of the tenant, renovating for the purpose of getting the tenant to vacate and forcing an existing tenant to agree to a new term of tenancy unless the changes are allowed by state law. (Bay City News) - Richard Beldon Waters III, 29, formerly of Contra Costa County, was sentenced to four years in prison for bank fraud and possession of stolen U.S. mail, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. Waters, along with convicted co-conspirator Desiree Bello aka Desiree Sanchez, 28, of Contra Costa County, were involved in a scheme to steal bank cards and identification documents from mailboxes and use them to perpetrate crimes. In March 2022, Bello was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for committing the same crimes as Waters. (EastCountyToday)
- Caffeine lovers rejoice! Pretty soon you won't even have to get out of your car to get your caffeine fix. Dutch Bros. plans to open a drive-thru coffee business on Clayton Road near Bailey Road in Concord next to Taco Bell. (Claycord.com)
- It's hard to believe, but it was 25 years ago this month that a waterslide collapsed at Waterworld in Concord killing one and injuring dozens. The tragedy happened as dozens of high school students from Napa packed the slide to see how many people could go down it at once. 18-year-old Quimby Ghilotti died about 45-minutes after falling 40-feet from the slide. - Police are investigating an assault and robbery of a postal worker that happened in the 2900 block of Camino Diablo in unincorporated Walnut Creek at approximately 12:55 p.m. on Monday. The thieves got away with the worker's keys and personal items. The postal worker was treated for head wounds that were suffered as a result of the attack. (News 24/680)
