Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- On Friday, Concord police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the lower level of the Sunvalley Mall and found one person with gunshot wounds. Police determined the person was trying to help a robbery victim and was shot by suspects who fled the mall. Police said the person shot was in critical, but stable, condition at a local hospital. Authorities are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the Concord Police Department confidential tip line at (925) 603-5836. (Claycord.com)
- Workers will clear brush and trim trees along the Iron Horse Trail for several weeks in January. The trimming will happen starting the week of January 3, 2022. Work will occur between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Crews expect to complete the work by the week of January 22, 2022 weather permitting. This work is to improve trail, fire, and general safety along this portion of the Iron Horse Corridor. (Pioneer Publishers)
- The Clayton City Council voted unanimously on Dec. 7 to allow residents to grow up to six cannabis plants outside a residential property for personal use. Local resident and organic gardener JC Yeh argued that outdoor growing lowers the fire hazard risk from grow light systems and reduces the need for fertilizers, pesticides and anti-fungus/mold agents. One area of concern could be the diversion of homegrown marijuana to commercial use, which is strictly prohibited in Clayton. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Every year more than 10,000 people participate in the East Bay Regional Park District Trails Challenge. 2022 marks the 29th year of the Trails Challenge. The 2022 Guidebook includes 20 detailed trail descriptions available for all levels of fitness, from easy to challenging. To complete the challenge, hike five of the 20 trails, or 26.2 miles of trails within East Bay Regional Park District. You can submit your log, online or by mail, by December 1, 2022 and receive a commemorative pin, while supplies last. (East County Today)
- On December 27, 2021, an investigation being led by the California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Division's Organized Retail Crime Task Force into a retail theft criminal enterprise led them to execute a search warrant at a residence in Antioch. Task force members located evidence of a retail theft operation there and recovered approximately $47,783 in stolen merchandise and booked $26,048 in cash into evidence. Task force members placed 43-year-old Herlinda Estrada-Mijares of Antioch under arrest and booked her on organized retail crime charges. (East County Today)
