This East Bay Restaurant Is Turning Sunday Into A Latin Dance Party

'Híjole Maria Oh Whateva' Latin day party in Concord returns for a spring edition.

CONCORD, CA — A small family restaurant in Concord plans to turn its dining room into a dance floor this weekend, inviting the community to eat, move and celebrate Latin music with no cover charge.

Cocina Híjole María — also known locally as “Oh Whateva” — will host the Spring edition of the Latin Day Party in Concord on Sunday, March 15.

The event blends food, music and dancing, with a free Latin dance lesson at 5:30 p.m. followed by a mix of salsa, cumbia, merengue and bachata.

DJ Rich Era will take over the music, spinning classic and modern Latin dance tracks while guests pack the floor inside the restaurant at 1819 Colfax St.

The event highlights a restaurant that locals describe as one of Concord’s hidden gems. Cocina Híjole María is a family-owned Mexican spot known for Guerrero-style cooking, fresh tortillas and bold cocktails. Diners often come for signature dishes like quesabirria, the oversized “Torta Whateva,” and the restaurant’s spicy pineapple margaritas.

The restaurant’s story began long before the storefront opened. The family once served meals from outside a Grocery Outlet before building a following strong enough to launch their own kitchen, according to a dedicated customer. Owner Francisco and his relatives created the restaurant in honor of their brother, whose favorite catchphrase inspired the playful name.

Today the restaurant sits tucked into a modest corner of Concord, serving dishes rooted in Guerrero, Mexico, while cultivating a loyal crowd that returns for both the food and the sense of community.

Sunday’s Latin Day Party adds another layer to that atmosphere — a casual gathering where newcomers can learn the steps and regulars can show off their moves.

Pro tip from regulars: grab that bingo card when you arrive — it’s part of the fun.
