Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Felony charges were filed against Ashton Montalvo, 32, and Deangelo Laraye Boone, 39, in the case of Mykaella Sharlman, whose body was found badly burned on the Mokelumne Trail in Antioch on October 17. Both men face two felony counts "on suspicion of arson and mutilation." (Concord Patch)
  2. "At Tuesday's meeting, the Concord City Council voted to introduce an ordinance requiring retail food operations to only offer disposable foodware accessories (utensils & condiments) upon customer request, in compliance with the state law AB 1276, which came into effect earlier this year. Concord's new ordinance will take effect on Nov. 24." (City of Concord, California via Facebook)
  3. Congressman Mark DeSaulnier has introduced the Local Gun Violence Reduction Act that will set up a database where state and local governments can enter data about programs that have worked to reduce gun violence for their jurisdictions. The hope is that this will create "an efficient, reliable means of identifying and implementing proven solutions." He also introduced a bill that aims to "establish a board of experts at the Department of Health and Human Services responsible for conducting research, evaluating federal and state policy proposals, and recommending best practices for reducing firearm deaths." (Claycord.com)
  4. Turns out ladybugs are awfully smart. In the winter, they cluster together for warmth. That's good news for us, because it makes them easy to see, clustered together on branches and fence posts in our East Bay parks. And they're starting to form their clusters! The Pioneer recommends Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland for particularly good ladybug viewing. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. Unfortunately, a car-b-que outside a home took out a whole house in Lafayette early Thursday morning. A fire that seemed to have started in the car spread to the house, causing extensive damage. Several Lamorinda fire departments responded. No injuries were reported. (News 24/680)

To view more information about the Local Roadway Safety Plan, as well as other efforts to implement Vision Zero, and how you can keep informed about the LRSP, visit www.lovelafayette.org/roadsafetyplan."
  • Orinda's California Independent Film Festival (CAIFF) runs Nov. 10 – 17 at the Orinda Theatre, 2 Orinda Theater Square. Visit www.caiff.org for more information.
  • Are you reading Portrait of a Thief by Grace Li for Read Contra Costa? "Share your thoughts with other readers from all over our county about this not-so-typical art heist story inspired by true events of Chinese art vanishing from Western museums; about diaspora, the colonization of art, and the complexity of the Chinese American identity" in a virtual forum on November 1.
