Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Limited BART train service resumed Tuesday morning between the Concord and Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre stations after an early morning grass fire shut down service, according to the transit agency. During the service outage, five buses took riders between the two stations. The fire burned near the Concord maintenance yard and trains were unable to be dispatched, so it impacted other routes on BART as well. (Bay City News)
  2. The US Marshals Service assisted Antioch Police in a weeklong sweep of outstanding warrants for violent offenders accused of crimes such as homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, robbery and sexual assault. They announced 23 felony arrests. "The DOJ-law enforcement community, U.S. Marshals Service, ATF, DEA, DHS, and FBI assisted by taking on the challenge alongside the Antioch Police Department to stem the rise in violent crime." (EastCountyToday)
  3. The Walnut Creek City Council on Tuesday discussed adding a 10-year half cent sales tax initiative on the November ballot. According to the staff report "Many city facilities that support the community's most valued programs and services are several decades old and nearing the end of their useful lifespans after constant use by tens of thousands of individuals and families," the report says. "To fund these current and future needs, the city council is asked to consider placing a ten-year, (half) cent sales tax increase on the November 8, 2022 ballot for voter consideration." Walnut Creek's current sales tax is the lowest of any city in Contra Costa County, at 8.75%. If the city decides to take the proposal to its voters, it must file the measure with the county registrar of voters by Aug. 12. (Claycord.com)
  4. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on July 15 that that directs the secretary of the Navy to publicly exonerate the Port Chicago 50. Fifty black sailors were convicted of mutiny 78 years ago when they refused to return to unsafe conditions at the Port Chicago Naval Weapons Station. "Fulfilling our nation's founding promise of equality and justice for all requires confronting our past and working to right historical injustices," said Congressperson Mark DeSaulnier of Concord, who helped spearhead the effort with Congressperson Barbara Lee. The resolution was included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. PG&E Corporation Foundation has gifted $500,000 to the California Restaurant Foundation to fund $3,000 grants to 144 hometown restaurants in 28 counties. Three restaurants in Contra Costa County were recipients of the grants. The three grants in Contra Costa County were awarded to El Mono in El Cerrito, La Tapatia Mexican Cuisine in Martinez and Lucky Star Chinese Restaurant in Concord. "Grants were made available to California resident restaurant owners with fewer than three units and less than $3 million in revenue, and prioritized minority- and women-owned businesses."
