Firefighters Rescue Driver As Car Goes Into Contra Costa Canal

The driver called for help when his vehicle became partially submerged in the canal, a fire captain said.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Firefighters rescued a person from a car that went into a canal Friday morning in Antioch, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman said Monday. The driver of the vehicle called the fire district at 7:58 a.m. because he couldn't get out of a car, which was partially submerged in the Contra Costa Canal near Hillcrest Avenue and Wild Horse Road.

Fire spokesman Capt. George Laing said the driver reported that the vehicle was sinking. When firefighters arrived, the car was not sinking and the driver appeared to be safe.

Laing said firefighters gave the driver a life jacket and helped him out of the car. He made it out of the canal by 8:12 a.m. and a tow truck pulled the vehicle from the canal by 9:12 a.m.
