Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Five people, including three juveniles, were killed in a wrong-way crash on Highway 4 near Loveridge Road around midnight Thursday. California Highway Patrol says that all four people in one car and the driver of the other all perished in the crash. There were no passengers in the second car. A Hyundai with four people in it, including three minors, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes when the collision occurred, according to officials. An investigation is underway. (Concord Patch)
- A Concord man was arrested and charged with killing his girlfriend just a month after he was released from jail in a separate assault case. Ira Harris is accused of stabbing his girlfriend, Bernadette Reed, in an encampment off State Route 242, where they both lived. He was charged with murder in the case and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. (East Bay Times)
- A road construction crew hit a gas line on Grant Street in Concord on Wednesday, causing a fire that temporarily closed the street and impacted electricity to some customers. "Electricity was shut off to the area and Grant Street was expected to remain closed at Frederick street for several hours as PG&E worked to cap the gas line, police said shortly before noon Wednesday." No evacuations were needed and there was no imminent threat to any structures. (Concord Patch)
- Brianne Zorn will be the new mayor of Martinez. Council member Lara DeLaney conceded the victory to Zorn on Wednesday. "With the vast majority of votes now processed, it's clear that Council member Brianne Zorn will win the Martinez Mayoral race," DeLaney wrote on Facebook Wednesday afternoon. "My congratulations to her and best wishes ahead in serving the town we love!" (Claycord.com)
- The Wells Fargo bank branch at 3630 Mt. Diablo Boulevard was robbed at around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, according to police and bank officials. The suspect was described as "a white male in his 30s, bald, blue eyes, wearing a brown beanie, brown hoodie and brown or tan pants." Authorities are still assessing how much cash is missing. - "Aspire Visual & Performing Arts Academy is performing at the Pittsburg High Creative Arts Building on Saturday, December 10 with a cast of some 100 scholars, grades Kindergarten to 12th grade from across Contra Costa County for our annual holiday production of Joy – The Urban Nutcracker!"
