🌱 Flavored Tobacco Ban? + Art & Wine Fundraiser + Town Square

Your five-minute guide to what's going on around town today.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Concord Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partial sunshine. High: 71 Low: 58.

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. Authorities identified a man and a woman who died from injuries suffered in a car crash early Monday morning on Port Chicago Highway in Concord. The fatal incident was reported around 1:45 a.m. near High School Avenue. The front passenger, a 51-year-old woman, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Katherine Hermoza of Concord, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, identified by the coroner's office as Jimmy Tello Alarco, 37, also of Concord, was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries Monday afternoon. (Concord Patch)
  2. Fully vaccinated individuals can go mask-free in select indoor places in Concord as of Monday. Contra Costa Health Services announced two weeks ago that starting Nov. 1, people who show proof of vaccination can take off their masks in indoor places that are not open to the public and contain fewer than 100 people. Hosts, businesses and organizations must verify that everyone in a room is vaccinated, according to the county. Neighboring Alameda County also relaxed restrictions Monday for fully vaccinated people. (Concord Patch)
  3. The Walnut Creek City Council will consider banning the sale of flavored tobacco and electronic smoking devices within city limits. The move is aimed at young smokers, attracted to flavored products for electronic vaping. The city's ban would be more restrictive than current federal and state laws. It would provide an exemption for adult-only hookah tobacco businesses. The ordnance would include a five-month enforcement delay to allow retailers to comply with the new restrictions. Both the county and the Mount Diablo School District have urged local cities to enact bans. (Claycord.com)
  4. The Lafayette Chamber is hosting a brand new fundraising event on Thursday and Friday. "The Best of Art & Wine" will showcase two popular Lafayette Festival bands, fine wine, great food and spectacular local art that will be available for purchase. Tickets are $100 per person, per night. Hors d'oeuvres, wine & beer, and live music included. Art and Festival t-shirts will be available for purchase. (News 24/680)
  5. On October 26, the Antioch City Council received an update regarding the Beede Lumber Site and provided direction to staff to invite proposers of a Town Square concept to present their idea to the council on Nov. 23. The property is located between 2nd Street and 3rd Street and between E Street and the termination of 3rd Street. The council encourages a mix of residential, retail, restaurant, public and entertainment uses that serve as a local and regional attraction. Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe reminded the public that the staff report was meant as a guide to discussion, not a proposal and the council was not deciding anything on what will or could happen on the site, but rather beginning the conversation.
