Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. The suspect in a carjacking earlier this week in Concord allegedly broke into a home on Ponderosa Way, off Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Before the homeowner was able to flee the house, the suspect went into the garage, and the homeowner locked the suspect in the garage. Police arrived and used a drone inside the home. The suspect was taken into custody. (Claycord.com)
  2. Saturday afternoon at about 2:56, Blackhawk Deputy Sheriffs responded to a home on East Ridge Court regarding a woman who was in a swimming pool and was not breathing. When the deputy arrived, he was told a child, who had also been in the pool, was already en route to San Ramon Regional Medical Center (SRRMC). An adult female was being attended to by fire personnel in the backyard and was then transported to SRRMC. They were both later pronounced deceased at the hospital. They are not being identified at this time. The Sheriff's office is conducting an investigation into the deaths. At this point, it does not appear suspicious and there are no signs of foul play. (News24/680)
  3. Police responded to a home in the 300 block of Birchwood Drive in Moraga on Saturday after a confrontation between neighbors allegedly turned violent. The incident was reported in a flurry of calls from neighbors at about 11:49 a.m. Neighbors said a homeowner, reportedly a man in his 50s, allegedly attacked a neighbor, beating her about the head and torso with a bat. At approximately 1:30 p.m. neighbors reported hearing a "gunshot" fired from the residence, though that could not immediately be confirmed. Minutes later, additional shots were heard as the suspect apparently armed himself with an AR-15-style rifle. Panicked neighbors reported the shots and police eventually moved in and confirmed that the suspect was deceased. (News24/680)
  4. On Nov. 26, 2021, an unoccupied vehicle was torched in the area of Viola Court and Wildflower Loop in Brentwood and on Dec. 30, 2021, the side yard of a home in the 500 block of Foxglove Court was damaged with a Molotov cocktail. Both incidents involved the same victim and fire personnel confirmed the fires were a result of arson. The suspect was later identified as Justin Eric MartinSilva, a 25-year-old Oakley resident. After police conducted a search of MartinSilva's residence, he was placed under arrest for several charges, primarily arson and possession of arson material and on Monday charges were filed. (Contra Costa Herald)
  5. Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, a Pittsburg police proactive graveyard officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop for vehicle code violations on Railroad Avenue. Upon contacting the driver, he was recognized as being previously arrested the night before for being in possession of a "ghost gun." K9 Kyra responded to the traffic stop to assist, which resulted in her alerting on the trunk of the vehicle (smelling/locating/detecting the odor of ammunition/explosives). A search of the vehicle was ultimately conducted, which resulted in officers locating 1 pound of marijuana, as well a large capacity magazine and ammunition. The driver was placed under arrest for the on-view charges. A search warrant was later authorized and served at the arrestee's residence. Multiple firearm manufacturing kits, high-capacity magazines, heroin, an assault rifle, and miscellaneous "ghost gun" parts were found. (Contra Costa Herald)
