Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- Joseph Martin, a former Woodside Elementary teacher that was convicted of child molestation in 2015 has been released from San Quentin after serving 6 years of a 12 year sentence. He is now living in Placer County according to the Megan's Law website. He faced 25 years in prison, but the judge sentenced him to 12 because his defense attorney successfully made the argument that the facts in the case the 25 year sentence would have been cruel and unusual punishment. He served only 6 of those years. Martin is now a registered sex offender. (Claycord.com)
- After more than 20 years of lobbying, fundraising and hard work by local history-minded citizens and politicians, the John Marsh House in Brentwood has secured $1.4 million from the state budget for construction and restoration of the 7,000 sq. ft. mansion. The house will be the centerpiece of the yet-to-open John Marsh State Park. The park will commemorate the site's Native American, Vaquero and early American pioneer cultures. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Live theaters are opening in Contra Costa! El Campanil Theatre in Antioch presents the Ghostlight Theatre Ensemble with "12 Angry Jurors." Salim Razawi directs the production, which runs Oct. 1-10. Everyone age 12 and older must show proof of vaccination. They will not accept negative COVID tests. Masks required regardless of age. And, Pittsburg Community Theatre finally opens its new black box venue PCT@Steeltown, which was just about to debut when COVID closed everything. This intimate setting at Steeltown Coffee & Tea in Old Town Pittsburg will launch with Tom Stoppard's farce "The Real Inspector Hound." The production runs Oct. 1-9. - Active COVID-19 cases in Contra Costa County are down 48.4% in the past two weeks, and hospitalizations for COVID-19 are down 14.3%, according to the Contra Costa County Health Department. Exactly 80% of eligible Contra Costa County residents 12 years of age and older have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the health department said. (Claycord.com)
- Here's a great opportunity for a civic-minded youth! Contra Costa County is seeking an individual to serve on the Arts & Culture Commission in a Youth Advisor seat. The Youth Advisor appointee will perform a Commission-approved service project during their term and will be expected to attend all Commission meetings and other Commission activities as needed. Applicants can be a high school or college students and must reside in Contra Costa County. (Contra Costa County)
