Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Jonathan Fey, the former principal of Monte Gardens Elementary School in Concord and Northgate High School in Walnut Creek was selected by the Pleasanton school board to lead Amador Valley High School. "I want to say thank you for the trust that you're placing in me in terms of being the instructional and curriculum leader of this wonderful and great school," Fey told trustees at the July 28 meeting. "It's going to be such a great opportunity." (Patch)
  2. An invasive mosquito species called Aedes aegypti has been found in the city of Martinez in Contra Costa County. "These mosquitoes are very aggressive day-biters that can transmit the causative agents of Zika, Dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. They can hide among vegetation and debris which makes them very challenging to find and eliminate. As we take our responsibility of protecting public health very seriously, we are setting additional traps, and going door-to-door in an effort to find and control these invasive mosquitoes and prevent them from becoming established in the county," said Paula Macedo, General Manager of the Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District. (Claycord.com)
  3. On Tuesday August 9, the Antioch City Council will be asked to vote on an employee referral and recruitment signing bonus program for the Antioch Police Department. The incentive program comes as staffing levels have consistently been below the approved level of 115. There are currently 102 active police officers in the city of Antioch. That's up from a low of 78 in April of this year. (East County Today)
  4. The Diablo Fire Safe Council has awarded the Campolindo neighborhood in Moraga $5,000 for wildfire preparedness. The Campolindo Homeowner's Association has decided to divide up the grant money among 10 homeowner projects. Homeowners who are granted these funds must match the grant on their projects. Those selected will be required to get a bid from one of the two vendors selected by the Homeowners Association. According to Lamorinda Weekly "To be eligible to receive a grant, the application must represent a group of at least five homeowners, but may contain more. ... Tree thinning and limbing up are acceptable activities, as are brush cutting, grazing or use of hired mechanical equipment for fuel reduction." Residents who wish to learn more about the DFSC grant program can find more information on the website http://www.diablofiresafe.org/index.html (lamorindaweekly.com)
  5. You'll find everything from champagne and oysters to milkshakes and tacos, with new restaurants popping up all over Walnut Creek. The one I'm most looking forward to? Model Bakery! I've been to one in Napa and it has the most amazing sourdough with kalamata olives and roasted garlic! My mouth is watering already. See what might make your mouth water that is coming soon to Walnut Creek in this article! (Walnut Creek Magazine)
