Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Three East Bay men have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deal firearms without a license. Troy Elias Walker, 24, and David Michael Rembert, 42, both of Concord, and Daljit Kamal Singh, 27, of Hercules, issued the pleas Friday. The charges arise from an investigation into the trafficking of unlicensed and illegal firearms conducted in-person and via Instagram in which law enforcement agents purchased 17 machine gun conversion switches designed for pistols and 13 other firearms over the course of multiple undercover buys in Concord, prosecutors said. (NBC Bay Area)
- A juvenile was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man Saturday morning at the corner of Meadow Lane and Johnson Drive, the Concord Police Department said in a press release. The victim, who was not identified, was shot multiple times. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Anyone with information about this case or who may have witnessed the shooting, is asked to call the Concord Police Department Detective at 925-671-3426.(Bay City News)
- Rattlesnakes are common in the regional parks and other Bay Area open space. The warm weather has recently made them more active. In general, the best way to avoid rattlers is to stay on official trails and refrain from taking shortcuts through tall grass and brush. When you stop to rest, avoid the rock piles, logs and tall grass that are snake habitat. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive. They may give a warning rattle if we pass too closely. If you see one, give it a wide berth and an avenue of escape. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Pleasanton Mayor Karla Brown commended the communal bonding and resilience of the residents of Pleasanton in the pandemic while highlighting a range of community accomplishments during her 2022 State of the City address last month. The theme of "together" was prevalent throughout the mayor's speech, and she reiterated that it takes everyone to work together in every way possible to create an award-winning "community of people who care about creating opportunities so that each of our businesses and our nearly 80,000 residents have what they need to proudly call Pleasanton their home." "Residents of Pleasanton and (I) both agree, we live and do work in an excellent city," Brown said. "I am honored to serve as your mayor, because together we are making Pleasanton a premier city to live, work and raise a family." (Pleasanton Weekly/ subscription may be required)
- For her long-time efforts to fight hunger in Contra Costa County, Caitlin Sly has been named 2022's Woman of the Year for District 14. Currently executive director of Meals on Wheels Diablo Region, Sly spent the first 12 years of her career at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. After attending UC Davis and spending a year in Mexico teaching English, Sly returned to Contra Costa County and began helping out at the food bank, where her dad Larry was the director. The Woman of the Year honor began in 1987, founded by Assemblymembers Bev Hanson and Sally Tanner to celebrate the contributions of exceptional women. It is sponsored and organized by the Women's Caucus of the state Legislature. (Pioneer Publishers)
