Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- James Kirker settled in the area, and may have done some ranching, but he was far from the average 19th-century settler, which is why the board is exploring changing the name of his namesake Kirker Pass Road. Kirker came to Contra Costa in 1850. Kirker was widely known as a "scalp hunter," and a killer of hundreds of Native Americans, working for the Mexican government in the 1840s. Karen Mitchoff the chairperson of the county Board of Supervisors and whose district includes the western portion of Kirker Pass Road said she requested a report from county staff outlining the necessary steps to rename the road, which she expects back soon. She said the process will likely take at least six months, including what will likely be a very public process of renaming the road. (Bay City News)
- In what has become something of a routine for local firefighters the vacant Black Angus building at 3195 N. Main Street in Pleasant Hill caught fire again Thursday. The fire, reported at 9:38 p.m., was quickly extinguished by Con Fire crews. An investigator was on scene to help pinpoint the cause of the blaze. (News 24/680)
- At a press conference on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, in Antioch, Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (AD16-D-Orinda), District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis announced the introduction of AB 2374 called "Crimes against public health and safety: illegal dumping," the bill was introduced in response to the rampant illegal dumping plaguing communities across California. This bill builds upon previous legislative efforts of Bauer-Kahan and Contra Costa and Alameda Counties in 2019. These efforts provided funding to the counties of Alameda and Contra Costa to establish a pilot program for additional enforcement of illegal dumping laws in both counties. AB 2374 raises fines on illegal dumping of commercial quantities up to $5,000 upon first conviction, up to $10,000 on a second conviction, and up to $20,000 on third or subsequent conviction. Additionally, this bill will give judges wider discretion for penalties. (Contra Costa Herald)
- On Thursday, CEMEX USA announced that after six years of collaboration and discussion, the company is intending to donate 101 acres of undeveloped land to the State of California which are expected to become part of Mount Diablo State Park. The tract of land that is intended to be donated is located close to CEMEX's Clayton Quarry in Clayton, Calif., and borders the park. (concordchamber.com)
- A vehicle struck the front entrances of Safeway in the Clayton Station Shopping Center on Kirker Pass Road at Clayton Road just before 12:30 on Saturday morning, according to police. The vehicle, which was described only as a gray Pontiac, fled the scene after the collision. No injuries were reported, and the store is still open for business. (Claycord.com)
