🌱 Lights Out In Lafayette + Measure X + Happy New Year?

Stay informed about everything worth knowing in Concord with Patch's daily newsletter.

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Concord Daily.

First, today's weather:

Sunny, pleasant and warmer. High: 79 Low: 50.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Measure X is a half-cent sales tax that was approved by county voters in 2020 to keep "Contra Costa's regional hospital open and staffed, fund community health centers, provide timely fire and emergency response, support critical safety-net services, invest in early childhood services, protect vulnerable populations and for other essential services". The money started accruing in April, the same month the county's advisory board began meeting. On Tuesday, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors unanimously accepted the Measure X initial assessment, but asked for more specifications before allocating $20,000 for a formally-written report. Supervisors asked the advisory board to report again at the supervisors' Nov. 2 meeting, when they would again formally consider the $20,000 request. (Claycord.com)
  2. If things keep going as well as they are, you may not be yelling "Happy New Year" through a mask, even if you are indoors. To qualify for a mask-less new year, Contra Costa must enter the yellow tier of infection rate as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and have fewer than 95 hospitalizations countywide. The county must also have a vaccination rate of at least 80 percent or be eight weeks past the date that vaccines are eligible for children ages 5 to 11 years old, which could be as early as Oct. 26. "If current data trends continue, Contra Costa may enter the yellow tier of transmission as soon as the end of this month and may meet all the criteria by December or early January," Health officer Chris Farnitano told the board. Now THAT would be a very happy new year, indeed. (Claycord.com)
  3. Clayton Valley High School alums celebrated a distinguished milestone last month, with their 50th high school reunion at Concord's Buchanan Air Field! Check out the pictures and see if you know any of them! (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. This time it was Lafayette's turn to be without power. About 2,500 woke up without power on Wednesday morning. At press time, PG&E wasn't sure what caused the outage, but most people were restored before noon. (News 24/680)
  5. The Better Business Bureau of The Golden Gate is warning fans that scammers might be selling fake Giant's playoff game tickets online. They are warning consumers to be smart when searching for and purchasing tickets, and to ensure that they are purchasing from a trustworthy source. Visit BBB Scam Tracker to research and report scams. (Contra Costa Herald)
