Longtime East Bay Parks Police Horse Trots Into Retirement

A mounted unit horse typically serves for 8 to 10 years. Deacon served for 19 years.

EAST BAY, CA — East Bay Regional Park District Police announced Thursday that longtime mounted unit member, Deacon, is hanging up his badge after 19 years on the job.

"A horse serving on the 'Mounted Unit' typically serves 8-10 years, but Deacon was honored with a farewell retirement ceremony after 19 years on the job," said East Bay Regional Park District police Sgt. Tyrone Davis. "At 30 years old, Deacon is now headed for greener pastures."

Deacon, a Quarter horse-Gelding, was only 7 years old when he was acquired by the District in 1996, Davis said.
