Man Turns Himself In After Striking Concord Pedestrian, 19, Saturday Night

The hospitalized victim had just started life "on his own" with his own place and a tree and gutter company job, said his worried aunt.

The driver of a car that struck a 19-year-old Concord resident on Saturday turned himself in to police after failing to stop at the scene, the victim’s aunt and police said.

Brittany Parsons said her nephew, Jacob Engel, was in the crosswalk on Oak Grove Road in front of Ygnacio Valley High School when a car struck him between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The impact was strong enough to tear the side mirror off of the side of the car and propel Engel into the air, Parsons said.

Engel suffered a severely broken arm, road rash and a head wound, Parsons said.

She said Engel works for a tree company and a gutter company and won’t be able to work due to the extent of his injuries.

“He’s right-handed and it’s his right arm,” Parsons said. “He’s getting surgery now to repair his arm. He needs plates and pins in it.”

He’s also under head trauma watch, meaning no television, no phone calls, no visitors for more than five or 10 minutes and no lights on in his room, she said.

Parsons said he’s doing well but “definitely shaken up.”

“This is the first time out on his own and away from living with his mom and he’s just getting into the world, getting his first job and everything,” Parsons said. “He was shocked. His family is taking it really hard. They’re worried about him.”

Concord police said the driver realized what happened and turned himself in shortly after the collision, providing his vehicle and insurance information.

Parsons said police told her that the driver didn’t realize what happened until he got home and saw that his side mirror was missing.

“He said he’s a family man and feels horrible,” Parsons said. “He is willing to take care of everything.”

“So, that’s good news,” Parsons said.
