🌱 Mt Diablo Condor! + Tree of Lights + Bad Costume Choice

Find out everything going down around town today with the Concord Daily.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Concord! It's Saturday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Cool with periods of sun. High: 68 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. A Pittsburg High School student has admitted to wearing a Ku Klux Klan "costume" to school on Wednesday. The student said it was part of a "dare." School principal, Todd Whitmire said that the costume was confiscated and school officials met with the student and his family. "As a school community, we are very disappointed and concerned with the actions of this student. We are committed to addressing what has occurred and working with this student to help him recognize the harm his actions have caused and, just as importantly, the responsibility he has, along with our school, to help repair them," the principal said in a statement to students, staff, parents and community members. 2. A California Condor has been spotted on Mount Diablo for the first time in over 100 years, according to Save Mount Diablo. The "Pinnacles Condor 828" was recorded visiting Contra Costa County in both August and September. I bet they came back to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mt Diablo State Park! (Claycord.com)
  3. Hospice East Bay is celebrating its 35th annual Tree of Lights with ceremonies in cities across Contra Costa and beyond. These ceremonies set aside time for families and friends to honor their loved ones through the symbolism of light and the reading of names. Events are scheduled from November 4 through December 22. 4. Meet Orinda's newest chief of police! Ryan Sullivan was selected by City Manager David Biggs for the position. After two weeks on the job, Sullivan summed it up as "...an exciting adventure." "I see the Orinda Police Department as part of the city, with a customer service approach to community policing," he said. "I want us to be highly visible and accessible to our citizens." Now living in Benicia, Sullivan enjoys dirt biking with his sons Liam and Sean, but he leaves motocross and BMX riding to them. "I know how that story would end," he said. (The Orinda News)
  5. The City of Oakley is currently in the process of transitioning from at-large elections for its five City Councilmembers to district-based elections. At the October 26 meeting, the council narrowed down its options on City Council District Maps to two finalists–one will be a 4-District map with an at-large mayor position. The second option is a 5-District map with the mayor position continuing to rotate. The City Council welcomes all feedback and public comments on the draft maps. Members of the public can submit comments via email at districting@ci.oakley.ca.us, by post to Oakley City Hall, 3231 Main Street, or by phone at (925) 625-7013. (East County Today)
