Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. Four elected officials and one social justice advocate plan to run this June for the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors District 4 seat currently held by Karen Mitchoff who plans to retire at the end of this her third term. As the race takes shape, it's clear that quality of life issues will drive the campaigns. Crime, homelessness, mental health services, jobs and the need for more housing are all listed as top priorities of all five candidates. You can read about all of the candidates and their views at this link. (Pioneer Publishers)
  2. Contra Costa County Health confirmed Friday that County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano has retired and will be recognized by the Board of Supervisors in March for his years of service. Per an internal memo, Dr. Ori Tzvieli will now fill the role. He was Farnitano's top deputy health officer during the pandemic. (East County Today)
  3. Antioch Young Ladies Institute YLI#101 will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year. YLI is the oldest Catholic women's organization on the West Coast. Annie M. Sweeney, her sister Mary E. Richardson and Emily Coogan founded The Young Ladies' Institute to provide material support to a young woman who contracted tuberculosis. On February 5, 1922, 50 ladies gathered in Antioch, California to organize the 101st Institute of the order. Congratulations on this milestone and here's to the next 100! (Antioch Herald)
  4. Lots of new culinary delights are soon to be had in Walnut Creek, with several dining institutions set to open. According to Diablo Magazine, Sweet Maple, the home of Millionaire's Bacon with sugar and peppers is coming to Walnut Creek—where Tozai Izakaya used to be on Giammona Drive - February 1. Also, Bober Tea is now open. To check out the latest tea offerings, head to Locust Street, a couple stores down from The Cheesecake Factory. Two popular and expanding restaurant chains will add more flavor to Walnut Creek's Orchards Shopping Center (Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove) in the coming months. Plucked Chicken and Beer, the Sauced BBQ and Spirits offshoot — which specializes in chicken and beer at its Livermore, San Ramon, and Pleasanton locations — will take over the space previously occupied by Patra Indian Grill, and The Kebab Shop will join the fun, as well. Finally, buzz has been quietly building for Lita. And the wait is over for this new contemporary Latin concept, which is now open in downtown Walnut Creek at Bonanza and Locust streets.
