Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. The DA has ruled that five law enforcement officers acted lawfully in 2019 when a man died in their custody at a homeless shelter in Concord, according to a report from the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. Steven Hankins, died Feb. 8, 2019, at a homeless shelter located at 2047 Arnold Industrial Way in Concord. The report says that Hankins was "acting aggressively" when the officers restrained him. Officers and EMTs were unable to revive Haskins after he became unresponsive in the restraint hold. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The report notes that the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy determined Hankins died from complications of cardiac dysrhythmia, likely caused by him having 10 times greater than a lethal dose of methamphetamine in his system.   2. The 30-year unbeaten streak of 318 football games for De La Salle High is over! In a last minute drive with 16 seconds remaining, Matthew Dougherty completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Nicolas Andrighetto for a come-from-behind St Francis win at home. In a stadium filled with St. Francis fans, students, parents and alumni alike, it was mayhem! It was alumni week on the St. Francis campus. Andrighetto, who caught the game-winner, is the fourth and last brother to play in the program. (MaxPreps.com)
  3. Concord native Peyton Omania of the Michigan State wrestling team has qualified for Team USA at the upcoming World Greco-Roman Championships. (WILX-TV)
  4. A Contra Costa man has pleaded guilty in a mail theft and bank fraud scheme committed throughout Northern California. (Department of Justice)
  5. The Martinez City Council will consider whether to transfer $122,705 from its general fund unassigned reserves to its marine enterprise fund, for repairs to the Martinez Marina caused by the Jan.19, 2021 storm. (Claycord.com)
