- Beware! Your neighbors in Concord are being scammed by someone posing as Bank of America and using Zelle to take their money. Two citizens from Concord (among many victims elsewhere) have fallen prey to this scam. "It's very confusing and you're sort of going, 'This doesn't quite seem right,' and at the same time... It's -- just 'smoke and mirrors' and they got me," Trista Beauchamp from Concord said. The scammers pose as B of A and ask people to transfer money with Zelle in order to combat fraud on their account. Bank of America has said it will not ask customers to transfer money between accounts or request sensitive information. (ABC30)
- Orinda's 2021 Citizen of the Year is Melanie Light, founder of the Orinda Firewise Council. Fire Chief Dave Winnacker sounded the alarm two years ago when he explained that research showed there was a very real threat of wildfire to Orinda. He urged Orindans to form Firewise groups to help reduce the fuel load on properties in the area. Melanie heeded his call and immediately called her neighbors together, forming what is now the Orinda Firewise Council. With Light's leadership Orinda has moved from one Firewise community to 26, which includes hundreds of homes. Light will be honored at the Citizen of the Year banquet which will be held in the Founders Auditorium of the Orinda Community Center Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. (The Orinda News)
- A collision on San Pablo Dam Road in front of the San Pablo Reservoir left one person dead and another critically injured on Saturday. A white Honda Civic was traveling south when it hit a Toyota Tacoma heading in the opposite direction. Investigators said the driver of the Honda veered to the shoulder in an apparent attempt to pass traffic when the driver lost control of the car and crossed over into the northbound lane, striking the Toyota. - Police were called to a domestic dispute on Island View Drive in Bay Point on Saturday. When they arrived they found a man and a woman in the street. The man fled on foot, but was later apprehended. The woman was taken to an area hospital, but later in the day she succumbed to her injuries. The man, 47-year-old Richard Ortiz of Bay Point, has been booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on various charges including domestic violence and murder. (Contra Costa Herald)
- Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey Friday voiced her support for Governor Newsom's announcement that the COVID-19 vaccine would be added to other vaccinations required for in-person school attendance for students and for all school employees. "I look forward to working with county health services to ensure that all students and staff get vaccinated as quickly as possible to comply with the new mandate announced today by Governor Newsom and ensure the long-term health of our county, especially those communities that have been severely impacted by COVID-19," Superintendent Mackey said.
