Here are the top stories today in Concord:
- A jury in Contra Costa County has found 30-year-old Pleasant Hill resident Won Kwak guilty of aggravated possession of child pornography and destroying evidence. The jury said that Kwak knowingly possessed over 600 images of child sexual abuse material, depicting pre-pubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Kwak's sentencing is scheduled for January 7, 2022. Kwak faces a maximum penalty of five years in state prison. (Claycord.com)
- Walter James "Herbie" Herbert II, a graduate of Campolindo High School and longtime resident of Lafayette and Orinda, died at his Orinda home Tuesday. Herbert was well known in the music scene in San Francisco. His first big gig in the music biz was managing Santana. Herbert went on to assume managerial duties for the Steve Miller Band and Mr. Big, joining with Neal Schon to form the nucleus of what would become Journey. A musician in his own right, Herbert also made regular and well-received appearances at The Fillmore. Bay Area music fans, musicians and rock industry friends took to social media to eulogize him as word of his passing began to spread, with Schon and others crediting Herbert with much of Journey's success. (News 24/680)
- A police pursuit of a reportedly stolen motorhome ended with a series of crashes on Bollinger Canyon Road at Market Place Wednesday evening. The RV entered the intersection against the red light and collided with a Prius. The Prius driver was uninjured. The motorhome rolled onto its side and the driver had to be extradited on a backboard and taken to John Muir Hospital. His condition, identity, and related information are still unknown. (News 24/680)
- In partnership with the local non-profit, The Youth Transportation Organization ("Yoots"), BART is working to launch a special Free BART Rides for School Field Trips program that will provide local students, teachers, and chaperones the opportunity to take transit to BARTable field trip destinations. Google has stepped up to support this program by providing $100,000 that will provide 20,000 students access to these field trips. The Packard Foundation has also donated $40,000 and the Golden State Warriors $5,000 to fund free BART rides for field trips. (Contra Costa Herald)
- The Contra Costa County Clerk's Office will officiate "Scaremonies" again for the public today, bringing back a unique tradition for the department. "Scaremonies," are wedding ceremonies officiated by clerk staff in costume. Approximately 20 ceremonies will be performed at the Contra Costa County Clerk's office. Unfortunately, all appointments for the scaremonies have been filled, and the County Clerk's Office does not accept walk-in appointments for ceremonies. Oh, well. Maybe it's best if you don't get married by the grim reaper, anway... (East County Today)
