Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- The City of Concord's Redistricting process is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. with the fifth and final public hearing. The proposed final map has been uploaded to the City's redistricting web page. Council is expected to vote on the final map at the April 5 hearing, and the map will be submitted to the County Elections office by the April 17 deadline, so the new updated district lines are in place prior to the 2022 elections. - An East Bay woman has been sentenced to prison for taking part in a mail theft and bank fraud scheme throughout Northern California, including using a stolen identity to purchase a new car from a Stockton dealership, according to federal authorities. Desiree Brianna Bello, 28, of Contra Costa County, was sentenced Monday to four years and nine months in prison for bank fraud and possession of stolen U.S. mail. The case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Stockton Police Department, the Folsom Police Department, the Concord Police Department, the Pittsburg Police Department, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and the California Highway Patrol. - Fire crews raced to answer calls for help after fire broke out in a unit of the Briarwood Apartment complex, 141 Golf Club Road, in Pleasant Hill Wednesday morning. The blaze was reported at 4:43 a.m. and crews arrived to find an upstairs unit fully involved with fire. Pleasant Hill police evacuated adjacent apartments. There were no immediate reports of injuries. (News 24/680)
- In a letter to Contra Costa District Attorney Diana Becton on Monday, Contra Costa Public Defender Ellen McDonnell asked for the names of the Antioch and Pittsburg Police officers who are the subjects of an investigation into possible crimes of moral turpitude. McDonnell is also asking for all the current, pending cases involving the officers so her office can conduct a separate review. As of 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, McDonnell said she had not received a response from Becton. (Contra Costa Herald)
- The Orinda Supplemental Sales Tax Oversight Commission (SSTOC), which was established by the City Council in 2021 to provide advice on Measure R funds, published the first draft of its annual report in early March. Issues named within the report as priorities include the threat of wildfire for the city, reduction of fire fuels from public and private properties, disaster planning and emergency response. The SSTOC report states that a significant fraction of Orinda is rated as a "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone," highlighting the importance of a strong prevention plan. (The Orinda News)
