Pittsburg Man Robbed Bank, Returned Cash, Then Fought Officers: Police

The suspect is accused of striking, spitting, and kicking multiple officers and trying to grab a weapon, police said.

ANTIOCH, CA — A man was arrested earlier this week after allegedly robbing a bank inside a supermarket in Antioch, briefly leaving with cash and then returning the money before struggling with officers and attempting to grab a service weapon, police said.

Officers responded at 6:06 p.m. Monday to a report of a robbery in progress at a U.S. Bank branch inside a Raley's store at 3636 Lone Tree Way, the Antioch Police Department said. The suspect, identified as Gerald Anthony Oretger, 41, of Pittsburg, allegedly handed a teller a handwritten note demanding money. The teller complied and gave him cash.

Oretger then briefly left the bank but returned shortly afterward and voluntarily handed the money back to the teller, police said. A security guard detained him at the scene.

When officers attempted to take Oretger into custody, he allegedly struck, spit on and kicked multiple officers and tried to grab an officer's service weapon, police said. He was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation before being booked.

No bank employees, customers or officers suffered serious injuries, police said.
