Here are the top five stories in Concord today:

  1. A driver died Thursday morning following a two-vehicle collision in Antioch that resulted in one car bursting into flames shortly before 10:30 a.m. at James Donlon and Contra Loma boulevards, according to the Antioch Police Department. Witnesses said both vehicles were speeding in the same direction on James Donlon prior to the wreck. The case is under investigation, and anyone with information or who saw the incident can call (925) 779-6864 or Officer Blumberg at (925) 779-6900, ext. 85444, or by emailing Fblumberg@Antiochca.gov. (Concord Patch)
  2. Christopher Owens, 39 of Martinez, was charged this week with multiple counts of rape and sex assault crimes that occurred in East Bay cities, including Concord, Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill since 2017. Now area law enforcement agencies are seeking any additional victims. "There may be more victims and incidents not known to law enforcement, or not yet connected to Owens," the Concord Police Department said. "It is suspected that Owens has committed rapes in multiple jurisdictions over many years." Any possible victims are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agencies, the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, or Concord police detective Kaitlyn Revel at 925-603-5864. Reference case number 17-12724. Phone calls also can be made anonymously. (Concord Patch)
  3. Police located the body of a man who was suspected of having jumped from a moving vehicle on eastbound Hwy 24 around 11 p.m. on Friday. Police sealed off the area shortly after arriving, shutting down the eastbound direction of the freeway until the body could be recovered. Witnesses say they saw the man jump from the car. It is not known at this time why the man jumped from a moving vehicle. (News 24/680)
  4. The City of Pittsburg announced Friday that Steve Albanese has been sworn in as the next police chief of the Pittsburg Police Department. " I love this community. It is my honor to carry the torch forward and continue the proud service to Pittsburg that this department has shown time and time again," said Albanese in a statement released by the City of Pittsburg. Albanese is a Pittsburg native and has worked in law enforcement in Pittsburg for 25 years. (East County Today)
  5. On Friday, Antioch Police officer Mulholland made a traffic stop within the area of Davison and Sunset City. As he was speaking to the driver, he noticed that the man, later identified as 48-year-old Donald Miller, was sitting on a gun. In a search of the vehicle, the officer also found a crossbow and about 20 grams of fentanyl. Yeah, if I was going to pick a weapon to sit on, I think I'd have chosen the gun rather than the crossbow, too. (East County Today)
