Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. On Monday the Lafayette City Council will decide whether to spend $50,000 on experts to assess how many trees PG&E needs to cut down in order to enable access to pipelines for first responders. In 2014 PG&E said it would need to cut down over 1,200 of Lafayette's trees for safety purposes. Lafayette balked at that number and the following year PG&E revised it down to 271 trees. With ongoing discussions and litigation, that number stands at 207 trees, but no trees have yet been cut down. The City of Lafayette has been in talks with PG&E this year to come to agreement on the final number of trees to be cut down and to put an end to the ongoing litigation with the utility company. 2. Representatives Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) and Barbara Lee (CA-13) successfully passed a measure that directs the Secretary of the United States Navy to publicly exonerate the Port Chicago 50. The effort was included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) (H.R. 4350), which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 316-to-113. On July 17, 1944, 435 African American munitions sailors were killed or injured when a cargo vessel exploded as they were loading munitions at Port Chicago. This incident accounted for more than 15 percent of all African-American Naval casualties during WWII and was the deadliest home front disaster during the war. When 50 of these men refused to return to the unsafe working conditions that killed their fellow sailors without additional support or training, they were charged and convicted of mutiny, while white officers were given time off. 3. The Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District reports another dead bird and one more group of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in Contra Costa County. The dead bird is the first dead bird reported from San Pablo and the mosquitoes were collected from a trap in the town of Oakley. (East County Today)
  4. Neighbors living in the area of Valley Oaks Drive and Stone Valley Road in Alamo will have to find a detour after a failing water main undermined their road and turned the asphalt into a sinkhole. (News 24/680)
  5. In response to continuous wildfire smoke in the air, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District extended its current air quality advisory through Monday. (Claycord.com)
