Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- On Wednesday, Feb. 9, Suisun City Mayor Lori D. Wilson officially filed for candidacy in the April 5th Special Primary Election race for California's current 11th Assembly District. The vacancy was caused by former Assemblyman Jim Frazier's resignation at the end of December. By 5:00 PM the next day, Wilson, a Democrat, learned she was the only candidate to file. However, there is still time for write-in candidates to file and run in the race, through March 22. Those interested and who live in Contra Costa County must obtain the necessary documents from the Elections Office in Martinez. (Antioch Herald)
- The Antioch-based An Elderly Wish Foundation had a great turnout for its 21st Annual Heart to Heart Gala fundraiser on February 5. This year's theme was "Fiesta for Wishes" and featured a Mexican buffet dinner and Mariachi band. The event helped raise funds to grant wishes to individuals aged 50 or older who have a serious or chronic illness and live in Contra Costa County. To raise funds during the event both a live auction and silent auction of donated gift baskets and other valuable items were held. In addition sales of mystery envelopes and a 50/50 card raffle helped raise funds. To learn more follow on Facebook or visit the website where you can read about the wishes that have been granted through the years and you can make a tax-deductible donation at www.elderlywish.org. - As you enter the music room at Concord High, you'll be struck by the eye-catching acrylic paintings by Sabrina Willett. A recent graduate of San Diego State, Willett began her creative journey in 2017 as a self-taught special-effects makeup artist. In 2020, she began experimenting with different "canvases," such as worn vinyl records, jeans, leather jackets and basically anything that could be painted on. "Sabrina's artwork has brought color, relevance and inspiration to the classroom," says Martin Lejano, director of instrumental music and chair of the Performing Arts Department. "Existing in this artistic space filled with beautiful paintings of influential musicians can only lead to more musical inspiration." (Pioneer Publishers)
- A Valley soccer team from Sanger High School in the Central Valley was left speechless after parents say they were the target of racial insults from the opposing side, De La Salle. The Sanger High School soccer team traveled three hours north to De La Salle High School in Concord on Tuesday, ready to play in the state quarterfinals. Once the game kicked off, the intensity was felt on the field and the bleachers. "Some of them were calling our kids 'Edgar' and 'Juan,' and [asking] 'Do you need a burrito?'" according to one of the Sanger parents. De La Salle High School president David Holquin said remarks like that would be reprehensible and unacceptable. "We have spoken with CIF [California Interscholastic Federation] and the Sanger High principal and with individuals here as we continue to investigate," said Holquin. (ABC7)
- Supporters turned out in a show of support for the people of Ukraine at the Lafayette Hillside Crosses Memorial Sunday. See the touching tribute, here. (News 24/680)
