Sutter Strike + Music & Market + Scary Stash

The latest from Concord, delivered right to your inbox.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Concord! It's Thursday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on around Concord today.

First, today's weather:

Clear throughout the day. High: 90 Low: 59.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. Healthcare workers at Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch plan to strike the first week in October, according to the hospital and the union that represents the workers. The hospital joins two others in the region in protesting low staffing levels and difficult working conditions. Sutter Delta, part of Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health, expressed disappointment about the looming strike and accused the union of refusing to make a good faith effort to reach an agreement. The hospital also said it stands by its offer, which includes "pay and benefits that are as good or better than others in the area." (Becker's Hospital Review)
  2. People in Lafayette and Moraga were in the dark about when power would be restored on Wednesday morning after a big rig pulled down a power line around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. About 2500 PG&E customers lost power in the mishap. By Wednesday morning, PG&E said it restored power to 1,552 customers, but the rest continued to be without power through at least 9:15 Wednesday morning. (News 24/680)
  3. BART workers found a passenger on a train at the Pleasant Hill station who had died late Tuesday night. "We can confirm there was an unattended fatality reported at about 9:15 onboard a train at a Pleasant Hill Station," according to an email from Anna Duckworth, a spokeswoman for BART. "The coroner responded. No foul play is suspected." I see people sleeping and/or passed out on those trains all the time. I always assume they are alive. I may have to rethink that. (Claycord.com)
  4. The City of Concord invites residents to join the first community meetings about its Housing Element Update, a plan for addressing the City's housing needs from 2023 through 2031. There are two ways to participate: In-person/Outdoors: Saturday, October 16 at the Concord Senior Center's front patio (2727 Parkside Circle), 12-3 p.m. (open house format – come by anytime!) or virtually: Tuesday, October 19, 6-8 p.m. via Zoom. 5. The Antioch SWAT team assisted the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in arresting two dudes with a scary stash. Juan Manriquez and Anthony Smith were wanted on a variety of weapons charges. Investigators found illegal assault rifle parts, conversion kits and manufacturing tools as well as an illegal handgun with a fully automatic switch. Anyone with information is asked to call the Antioch Police Department non-emergency line at (925)778-2441. You may also text-a-tip to 274637 (CRIMES) using the key word ANTIOCH. (East County Today)
