Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- It's tarantula season and the little critters are out in force looking for mates. Tarantulas look frightening, but they really aren't that dangerous for humans. They do have venom, but when they bite you it is about like a bee sting. They are not an aggressive arachnid, so they will only bite if they feel threatened. If you'd like to see a tarantula in the wild, the Fairy Lantern Trail at Diablo Foothills Regional Park is said to be a good bet. But the real hotbed of tarantula activity seems to be the Mitchell Canyon area of Mt. Diablo State Park. If you do see one, leave the little guy alone and he'll leave you alone. (Pioneer Publishers)
- The Pittsburg Police Department provided an update to last Sunday morning's fatal shooting. Police believe the victims were sitting in their car in a 7-11 store parking lot at 4600 Century Boulevard, when an unknown assailant fired several shots into the vehicle for an unknown reason. Unfortunately, the second victim has succumbed to her injuries. Detectives are working to locate additional video surveillance of the incident, along with detailed information from witnesses. (East County Today)
- Eric Andrew Oller and Brian Christopher Mitchell, the former owners of Walnut Creek-based Signature Painting and Construction, Inc., were each charged with nine felony counts as part of a worker's compensation scheme that defrauded insurance carriers of more than $5M. The charges were filed by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the California Department of Insurance. Yama Sekander, owner of A-1 World Class Painting, was also charged with one count of felony workers' compensation fraud. (Danvilleandsanramon.com)
- A Dublin Middle School principal who was put on leave last week after an incident involving a student will be back at work today according to the district's director of HR. The incident involved a mother and her student son in a heated discussion with Wells Middle School principal, Mark Neal. The district performed a review of the incident and put the principal on leave during that review. In a memo sent to school staff the HR director concluded "We're happy to announce that Mr. Neal will be back on work on Monday, Sept. 27. Thank you for respecting the process and the outcome in order to support Mark and the school in an effort to move forward." (Danvilleandsanramon.com)
- The Concord Police weekly burglary report shows 7 burglaries last week, three of which happened at a rental storage facility on Galindo Street. (Claycord.com)
