Two Temblors + Drone Rescue + $1M For MUSD

First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. The 19th Annual MRC-MEF Run for Education, held on September 26, raised $75,500 for the Martinez Education Foundation (MEF) for K-12 supplies and educational experiences in the Martinez Unified School District. Over 600 people participated in the event this year. The Martinez Refining Company (MRC) provides a sponsorship match of $20,000 and underwrites the event. Since inception in 2003 the run has raised over $1M for MUSD. (Martinez Gazette)
  2. Antioch police used the assistance of drones to find and rescue a woman who had become stranded in high tide near the old fishing pier west of the Antioch Marina. According to the woman, she had stopped to take a nap and when she woke up the tide had come in trapping her in the tulles. Police utilized the drone to find her among the bushes and guide Contra Costa County Fire to her rescue. The rescue operation lasted approximately 2 hours. (East County Today)
  3. An earthquake rattled through the East Bay on Friday night and another one hit on Saturday. The Friday quake had a preliminary magnitude of 3.2 and the Saturday quake was a little bigger with an preliminary magnitude of 3.4. Both were centered near the city of San Leandro.   4. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air alert on Saturday because of wildfire smoke, combined with high temperatures in the region. The air district issues the Spare the Air alerts when smog pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels that can cause throat irritation, congestion and other health problems. (Claycord.com)
  5. Two people were confirmed dead and two others injured after a crash on Highway 4 east of McEwen Road early Saturday morning. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was driving erratically just prior to crashing in the eastbound lanes. (News 24/680)
