Waterpark Shooting Suspect In Custody, Concord Police Say

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested the 28-year-old Oakland man who was also wanted by the Oakland Police Department, Concord police said.

CONCORD, CA — A suspect accused of shooting another man two weekends ago in the parking lot of Concord's Six Flags Hurricane Harbor waterpark is in custody and is facing criminal charges in at least two counties, officials with the Concord Police Department said Tuesday. Donald Sims, 28, of Oakland, is accused in the shooting reported just before 5 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

"Our investigation revealed Sims and the victim were involved in a minor dispute in the parking lot of the water park," Concord police officials said. "The victim was sitting in his car when Sims unexpectedly pulled a handgun from his car and fired at the victim."

The victim was transported to a hospital with a significant gunshot wound to his lower body but is expected to survive.

Detectives identified Sims as the suspect by conducting victim interviews and reviewing surveillance footage.

Detectives also learned the Oakland Police Department had a warrant out for Sims' arrest accusing him of assault with a firearm in an incident pre-dating the Concord shooting.

Sims was captured Thursday, July 18, by U.S. Marshals in Sacramento; as of Tuesday, July 23, Sims was being held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on the Alameda County warrant from the Oakland Police Department.

Contra Costa County prosecutors charged Sims Monday on suspicion of felony attempted murder and sentence-enhancing weapons charges in connection with the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor incident, Concord police said.
