Hey Concord: As you may know, Amazon Web Services experienced an outage on Tuesday that affected the Concord Daily. Some of you might have received a late newsletter on Wednesday, or no newsletter at all. Please know this was unfortunately beyond our control, but know that we are fully back in business! - Jeri

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. At the Dec. 7 Concord City Council meeting, outgoing Mayor Tim McGallian turned over the gavel to Vice Mayor Dominic Aliano after he was selected by fellow councilmembers as the City's mayor for 2022. Councilmember Laura Hoffmeister was selected to serve as vice mayor for the year ahead. Aliano was first elected to the Council in November 2018. He previously served on the Board of Directors for three local non-profits. Aliano also served on the Concord Planning Commission from 2016 to 2018 and served as the chair in 2018. Hoffmeister was first elected to the Concord City Council in 1997 and was subsequently reelected five times. She served as Mayor in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2016-2017. (Claycord.com)
  2. A 24-year-old man has been arrested after investigators found more than 80 items worth at least $14,000 that had been stolen from Home Depot stores in San Carlos, San Mateo, Colma, Pittsburg, Brentwood and San Jose, according to police. Eric Crossman was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of commercial burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest, police said. Anyone with more information about the case is encouraged to call Detective Sgt. Nick Perna at (650) 780-7672 or the Redwood City police tip line at (650) 780-7110. (Claycord.com)
  3. Danville Police are investigating a robbery at Danville Ace Hardware, 3438 Camino Tassajara, that occurred during the afternoon of Sunday, December 5, 2021. Police determined that three men entered the Ace Hardware store and took tools worth approximately $1,100. An employee attempted to get the license plate of the vehicle while in the parking lot and was assaulted by one of the suspects. The suspect robbed the employee of his phone and then fled with his accomplices in a tan-colored Chevrolet Trailblazer. Danville Police are continuing to investigate the case and are asking anyone with information to please contact Officer Vince Barbero at vbarbero@danville.ca.gov or for more information, contact Lt. Jason Ingrassia at (925) 314-3700 or jingrassia@danville.ca.gov. (News 24/680)
  4. Global supply chain woes are affecting local food nonprofits. Food banks serving the hungry throughout the Bay Area are also acutely feeling the pinch as the economic effects of the pandemic persist. The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is seeing price increases of 8-10 percent that they are trying to offset. At Monument Crisis Center, they find that either a product is unavailable or it is an extremely long wait. The trickledown is hitting the food distribution program particularly hard, and there is a constant need for substitution, flexibility and revised budgeting. MCC is also seeing more than 6,000 people a month for food assistance, about double pre-pandemic levels. The demand increase is exacerbating the supply chain problem. (Pioneer Publishers)
  5. Prior to the start of the regular meeting of the Contra Costa Community College Governing Board on Wednesday, the trustees met in closed session beginning at 4:00 p.m. to discuss the discipline/dismissal/release/complaint of Chancellor Bryan Reece. In addition, during the regular meeting, a censure and investigation of Board President Andy Li was discussed. (Contra Costa Herald)
