Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. A robbery occurred in the parking lot of the Wells Fargo Bank at 699 Contra Costa Blvd. on January 18, 2022 at 9:43 AM. The victim went into the bank to conduct business and when she got back into her car a male suspect broke her passenger side window and tried to take her purse. The suspect ended up getting an empty bank deposit bag. The victim was not injured. If you have any information that could help this investigation, please call the Pleasant Hill Police Department at (925) 288-4600. (Claycord.com)
  2. Officer Dylan Luciano has been honored with the Concord Kiwanis' 2021 Police Officer of the Year award. In his nomination statement to the Kiwanis Club, Provisional Lt. Robert Garcia noted Luciano's "passion for police work and a commitment to bettering the community he serves." As a sworn member of Concord PD, Luciano has become one of the department's most active and productive patrol officers on the street. He is currently a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, a backup jailer, a drug recognition expert, a member of the Recruitment Committee and a backup crime scene investigator. "I can't do this job alone,'' said Luciano. "The part I play is small in the puzzle. I am only successful because of my partners who I work with and being with an agency that supports its officers." (Pioneer Publishers)
  3. During Contra Costa County's virtual, community 44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and Humanitarian Awards, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, Humanitarians of the Year, Gigi Crowder and Kaia Morgan were honored. Gigi Crowder, an Antioch resident, is the mother of two biological children, 30-year-old twin sons, and has served as a foster mom and mentor to many more. Her current focus is addressing the needs of those living with mental illness who are often criminalized for living with a medical condition. Contra Costa County Student Humanitarian Kaia Morgan of Pittsburg is a senior at Ygnacio Valley High School. In February of 2020, Morgan was inspired by a class lesson on the harm of Native mascots to use her voice to speak out against racism on a more local level, starting with the Native mascot at her high school. She started the Change the Mascot Committee at Ygnacio Valley High School that month, and as of December 2021, their mascot is now the Wolves. (Contra Costa Herald)
  4. The Brentwood Police Department announced Wednesday four people were arrested after offers were dispatched to a vehicle burglary in progress call. Police officers arrived on scene where they detained Luis Montalvan-Kuan, Vanessa Santos-Martinez and Carlos Prado, all from Oakley, and Teri Kyle from the City of Antioch. Officers determined that tires had been stripped from one vehicle and there was damage to another vehicle as well. All four subjects were placed under arrest. (East County Today)
  5. Concord residents will soon be able to obtain up to three free N95 masks for themselves, thanks to an effort from the Biden administration to distribute 400 million free N95 masks around the country. Patch recommends contacting your local pharmacy or health care center early next week for new details about their mask supplies, and where you can find the nearest free N95 masks. You can find a list of the pharmacies closest to Concord at this link. (Concord Patch)
