Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- December 3rd Is International Day Of People With Disabilities. Join the Contra Costa County Library for a series of author talks, events and booklists focused on the disability experience. Interested in reading more about life with a disability? The Contra Costa County Library Accessibility Committee has curated reading lists of adult fiction, adult non-fiction, books for kids and tweens featuring disabled authors and protagonists. - MaxPreps has published its list of the greatest coaches, players and teams from the 1990s and De La Salle made the list 5 times! Honors include Winningest Program, Winningest Coach and Top 10 teams, twice! (MaxPreps)
- Concord mayor Tim McGallian and vice mayor Dominic Aliano, along with many sponsors and volunteers, distributed more than 600 turkey dinners to local families in need, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Each dinner included a turkey, string beans, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce and dinner rolls. Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery helped deliver the boxed meals. (Pioneer Publishers)
- Officers were dispatched to a report of a shoplifting incident possibly involving several suspects at Ace Hardware at the Tassajara Crossings Shopping Center at around noon Wednesday. Arriving officers located several witnesses who were provided a description of the suspects and a getaway vehicle. A short time later, officers received a report from a victim stating he had been carjacked at knifepoint. The victim drove the suspect to San Ramon, where undercover police officers reportedly observed the suspect carjack a second vehicle in the Crow Commons Shopping Center. Officers stopped the second vehicle and rescued two people who said the car had been taken by force. The other two suspects wanted for the Ace Hardware thefts are still outstanding. (News 24/680)
- Contra Costa Community College District (4CD) colleges — Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College and its San Ramon Campus, and Los Medanos College and its Brentwood Center — are among the first 15 colleges in the state to become Teaching Colleges on the California Virtual Campus Online Education Initiative. 4CD students can now quickly enroll in online courses offered at other eligible community colleges in the state without completing another college application. In addition, transcripts and financial aid are also coordinated to streamline these processes for students. The CVC-OEI is a collaborative project among California's community colleges and is funded by a grant disbursed by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. (Contra Costa Herald)

- That Grand Old Lady, also known as the Orinda Theatre, celebrates her 80th birthday in style Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Owner/Operator Derek Zemrak has secured the rights to Cinema Paradiso for the evening, which will include surprise announcements regarding the theater. Built by Donald Rheem with architect Alexander Aimwell Cantin, the Orinda Theatre originally opened Dec. 27, 1941, with the movie Texas starring William Holden. Slated for demolition in 1984, it was saved through the efforts of preservationists and reopened in 1989 with two additional screens added. The theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Contra Costa County. (Theorindanews.com)
