Summer is in full swing and here in San Diego that means one thing: Beach days!
As great as the beach can be, spending the day there can be dangerous if you do not take any safety precautions. So here are a few beach safety tips from your friendly, neighborhood San Diego personal injury lawyer.
1. Never swim alone. Always take a buddy with you into the water.
2. Always maintain close supervision of children. If you are separated from a child or loved one, contact a lifeguard immediately.
3. Never turn your back to the ocean. You can easily be swept in by a large wave if you are un prepared.
4. Say away from coastal bluffs that can collapse or give way.
5. As of 2008, alcohol is not permitted at San Diego beaches.
6. Do the sting ray shuffle! San Diego beaches are home to stingrays in the summer, so shuffle your feet when you enter or exit the water to let them know you are coming. The sting is very painful.
7. If you are caught in a rip current, don't fight it, swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current.
8. Don't leave valuable in your car. Packed beach parking lots and adjacent streets are extremely prone to break ins.
9. Make sure to liberally apply sunscreen, even on cloudy days.
10. Obey all posted warning signs and lifeguard directions.
This may seem like a daunting list, but remember, a safe time is a fun time!
