Caltrans to Begin Bridge Work Later in the Evening

Complaints prompt the change as the state updates machinery and barriers on the span; project could take up to two weeks.

The state's work to replace machinery and barriers that separate inbound and outbound traffic on the Coronado bridge will begin later following complaints about traffic, city officials said Monday.

One lane on each side of the bridge will be closed for up to two weeks. The work will begin at 8 p.m. weeknights, and at 9 p.m. on Sundays.

That's one hour later than originally planned during the week, and two hours later on Sundays.

  • Caltrans' work will be performed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and at 9 p.m. on Sundays. No work will take place Friday or Saturday.
  • The closure will affect Interstate 5. Northbound ramps to and from the bridge, as well as a connector from the bridge to Cesar Chavez Parkway/Logan Avenue will be closed.
  • Electronic signs will be placed around the bridge to warn drivers about delays.
  • Questions about the project or traffic impacts can be shared with Caltrans at (619) 688-6723.

The moveable concrete barrier was last replaced in 1993. It is moved four times a day Monday through Friday and for special events. It takes about 35 minutes to move most days.
