Cox Seeks Support for Veterans Homes on Tax Returns

The county supervisor, along with Fletcher, call for donations to be made on tax forms.

Filers should donate to the state Veterans Home Fund when they complete their tax returns, county Supervisor Greg Cox and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego, said Tuesday.

The fund helps support six veterans' homes around California, including one in Chula Vista, where the elected officials made their plea. It is one of several charitable causes that taxpayers can support via their state income tax forms.

Programs at the homes, which serve around 1,700 veterans, are covered with proceeds from the sales of prisoner-of-war license plates, golf course green and range fees, investment interest and donations.

"Our veterans were there for us when we needed them," said Cox, whose district includes Coronado, Imperial Beach and other South Bay communities. "Now, let's be there for them."

Program funds go toward hobby and wood shop activities, outings, a library and memorial services, said Neal Asper, administrator of the home in Chula Vista.

Two homes are set to open over the next few years.

“As a Marine combat veteran, I know firsthand the critical importance of providing needed services to those who have honorably served our country,” said Fletcher, who is running for San Diego mayor.
