Final Rites Held for Lt. Mosko

Navy releases photo of private service where the slain officer was laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans.

A day after Coronadans and San Diegans , the Naval Amphibious Base officer was laid to rest at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Mosko's remains arrived at North Island Naval Air Station Thursday, where a brief ceremony was held for his family and colleagues. Then a procession took the group down 4th Street, over the bridge and past Balboa Park to a Hillcrest mortuary.

The Fort Rosecrans funeral took place Friday.

Mosko served as part of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3, an assignment that has taken on more importance in the military in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, according to a recent piece in the New York Times.

The story shines a spotlight on a monument at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida to honor those who have died while serving in the specialized units. The memorial was updated May 5 with 18 new names of those lost in action.

Mosko's will be included in the future; he was killed April 26 in Ghazni Province in Afghanistan, after organizers had finalized preparations for this year's update to the monument. The memorial contains 289 names.

A mentor said learning to be part of an EOD unit “appealed to Chris' engineering side,” referring to his dual bachelor's degree, which also was awarded in commerce.

The piece also discusses the EOD Memorial Foundation, which helps families attend the Eglin ceremonies when names are added to the monument and awards scholarships to the deceased's loved ones.
